Grand West Casino’s main Casino air handling units have been in operation for over
22 years and been exposed to Cape Town’s weather elements and contamination from
surrounding industrial areas- an upgrade was highly recommended.
The first phase of the project was the replacement of the chilled water coils on four of the
air handling units. This work had to be expedited and completed before phase 2 could
commence. Fortunately, our coil supply partner managed to manufacture and deliver the
coils in time to have them installed and commissioned in time for phase 2 to commence.
The second phase involved replacing four air handling units behind the front façade of the
building. The air handling unit crane lift started early morning on 25 November 2022.
The 275-tonne capacity mobile crane had to be relocated after two AHU’s were safely
lifted onto the roof in order to lift the last two AHU’s into position. The project manager left
site later that evening after the crane was safely deconstructed and removed from site.
The new Trox air handling units were supplied with EC plug fans which provide energy
efficiency at variable loads and offer redundancy in the overall system.
The installation of the chilled water piping, control valves, ducting, electrical power supplies
and controls is currently in progress with the final commissioning scheduled to be
completed by 15 December 2022.
